NH Students Gear up for Another Season

Welcome back, NH Students, for another fun filled and exciting season of ski patrolling with the New Hampshire Region.  It seems as though it was a short summer, and suddenly there we were, snow flying, and slopes open for skiing, boarding, and running calls with our local patrols.

For many, the fall brought with it a full three months of studying and testing as we indoctrinated our newest group of students into the Young Adult Program.  They came from both Crotched Mountain Ski Area and Pats Peak .  More than six, in all, forged their way through the entire program to become fully certified and will join the ranks of other young adults and ski patrollers at both areas.

So, there may not have been snow and skiing, but the newest young adult patrollers were busy preparing to take on the responsibilities of patrolling and adding to our ranks.

I sincerely hope that you all have a fantastic ski season and embark on a winter full of training, learning, and having fun.  I hope you will all be able to join us for the NH Region and Eastern Division YAP seminars as we draw closer to February and March.  Best of Luck.

NH REGION SEMINAR ANNOUNCED

Well it is almost that time of year again when we get all of the NH Region Young Adult Patrollers together for a day long training event known as the NH Region YAP Training Seminar.  In years past, this event has been packed with instruction in Outdoor Emergency Care skills and scenarios, hands on training on ski and toboggan skills, as well as providing  a medium for students across the State to meet and network with each other.  This years training event will be no different.

The event will be held at Crotched Mountain Ski Area in Bennington , NH on February 7th, beginning at 8am.  This area offers a variety of terrain to train on that will prove to be challenging to the students in regards to Ski and Toboggan skills.

The event will include Ski and toboggan skills review and training in the morning then a break for lunch.  Students are responsible to provide their own lunch.  The afternoon will be full of first aid scenarios that will bring YAP ’s through the basics of the OEC program and re-enforce the important skills of patient assessment.

The day will conclude with a review and summary and with a detailed explanation of how to apply for attendance at the Eastern Division Student Seminar.

The NH Region Ski and Toboggan instructional team will be on hand to provide  official NSP instruction.

As with years past, we are always looking for volunteers to help with the event.  From helping to organize, to participating as patients for skills stations, act as evaluators, etc., we need your help to make this event a success again this year.

We even encourage those who are not OEC certified to participate as this is a “learning” environment, and not one that is focused around competition.  Those young adults who are looking to get involved with their local patrol and are “candidates” in their first year, are also encouraged to attend to “get their feet wet”.

On a day like this one, the sky is the limit and your training experiences will only be limited by your imagination.  So take the time, fill out the NH Region application pack and send it in to get yourself registered for this years NH Region YAP Seminar.

The registration pack can be found within this publication and should be completed as soon as possible.  They MUST be turned in ahead of time in order for us to get an accurate count all those who will be attending and to ensure that the liability release and waivers are completed and signed by parents.

SUNAPEE Students to participate in Disabled Sit-Ski Day

The Sunapee Young Adult Program will be participating in a disabled sit-ski day at their area on January 30th.  The students will be able to interact with those who utilize sit-skis at their facility and even have the opportunity to operate one.  This unique insight gives the students a much better appreciation for the sport and the challenges that go with it.  The day will be highlighted by a simulated lift evacuation in which the ski patrol will extricate individuals in a sit-ski from the lift for practice.

Sunapee has invited The NH Region Student Advisor who will be in attendance to see this event first hand.

Eastern Division Seminar Announced

The Eastern Division Young Adult Training Seminar will be held at Jiminy Peak this year which is located in the middle of the Eastern Division in Massachusetts .

There will be plenty of great skiing, training, and most importantly, fun for all those who attend.  This year’s seminar will include:

  • 3 nights of lodging (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

  • Dinner and Breakfast

  • Lift tickets for the duration of the event

  • Division evaluators and Instructors

  • Mystery Events

NH Region students are STRONGLY encouraged to attend this event.  Local YAP Advisors are also encouraged to attend either as chaperones, evaluators, helpers, or patients.

Enclosed, you will find the Eastern Division YAP Seminar official application.  Those interested should complete the application as soon as possible and send it back to Jerry Hyson, the Eastern Division Student Advisor.

I hope to see you all there!

Young Adult Programs need to Register

The NH Region has seen an increase in the amount of young adults that are joining local area programs.  Mt Sunapee stayed strong at nine students this year while Pats Peak increased from five to ten.  Gunstock took on almost ten students this season as well.

All though we now this year have been a re-building year for many programs across the Region, we still need your programs to register with the Region advisor.  This is the only way to determine exactly how many young people are participating and how to best serve the needs of these programs.  If you have a program or new students, please contact the advisor at: chris.rousseau@dos.nh.gov to register.  The more accurate our statistics, the more we can do to support your programs.
