Mountain Travel & Rescue (MTR) Level 2 course info

What:  Mountain Travel and Rescue (MTR) Level 2 course is an elective course for NSP patrollers that have an interest in expanding their knowledgeable in backcountry travel and rescue procedures.  This course is also open to the public with the same interests. 

When: Saturday and Sunday, 12-13 January 2008 and 16-18 February 2008

Where:  Northfield Recreation Area, Northfield MA and the White Mountain National Forest vicinity for Zealand Notch

Time:  7:30 am January 12, 2008 4:00pm January 13, 2008 and 10:30am to 3:00pm February 16- February 18

Prerequisites:  MTR1 NSP course or equivalent as determined by Eastern Division MTR supervisor.

Manuals:  An NSP MTR manual is not include in the course fee and must be purchased separately.  Contact Instructor of record if you are not and NSP member.

Logistics:  Session 1 Class will begin promptly at 8:00am ; we recommend that you plan on arriving at about 7:30-7:45am .  You will need to bring a notebook and a pen or pencil to take notes.  Students should be prepared to work through the lunch period if needed. Student must bring all equipment and be prepared for overnight camping plus classes in the outdoor environment.  Pack and inventory all personal and group equipment using check list in appendix of MTR manual (page 147) Final packing to be conducted during class.  The class will go continuously until 4:00pm on Sunday.

Session 2 Trail head departure NLT 11:00am ,16 February for continuous field exercise until 2:00pm 18 February 2008 ,  more details provided at Session 1. 

Cost:  The cost of the course is $90.00 NSP and $110.00 non-NSP, which includes lunch on Saturday.  Checks should be made out to “Eastern Division NSP” and received by the course coordinator not later than (NLT) Sunday, December 30, 2007 .

Agenda:  The MTR2 course is made up of 17 lesson topics.  These lessons cover topics including Personal Survival, Travel, Back Country Considerations, and Search and Rescue skills.  These are all reinforced with an overnight camping exercise and two and half day field extended exercises with overnight camping for Navigation, Technical Emergency Rescue Techniques and Search and Rescue.

Completion:  When completed you will have the knowledge to continue building skills and become a member of a Search and Rescue organization. This is an intermediate level course and you are encouraged to continue with additional education in the skills taught in this course through either the NSP or other outdoor education organization.
